Dr. Philemon Mateke, father of the late State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, has described his daughter as a unifying figure in the politics of Kisoro District.

Dr. Mateke, who also serves as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson in Kisoro, shared that he played a key role in guiding Sarah toward a political career, frequently advising and encouraging her to become a strong leader.

Reflecting on her political journey, Dr. Mateke said that Sarah, having grown up watching his involvement in politics, naturally followed in his footsteps. He commended her as a dedicated NRM member who would tirelessly travel across Kisoro District daily to mobilize support for the party. He described her as a hardworking, people-centered leader who never created conflict with anyone.

“I have lost a daughter who was humble and respected everyone,” Dr. Mateke expressed, noting that the people of Kisoro recognized her leadership potential during her time in office.

Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, born on July 15, 1974, passed away on September 7, 2024, at the age of 50. She was a Ugandan politician and educationist who served as the Woman MP for Kisoro District and was appointed State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs in Uganda’s 11th Parliament by President Yoweri Museveni. She was the third of seven siblings.

According to the burial program, Sarah Mateke will be laid to rest on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Nyakabingo, Kisoro District. Her body will arrive at All Saints Cathedral in Kampala on Tuesday, September 10, for a memorial service. Following the service, the body will be taken to Parliament for a special sitting at noon. On Wednesday, September 11, her body will be transported to Nyakabingo, Kisoro, for a council session.

The final burial service will take place on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Nyakabingo.
