Local leaders in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, are appealing to top government officials, including Members of Parliament and the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, to provide urgent relief for communities devastated by recent hailstorms.
The repeated storms have caused significant damage in the parishes of Rubanga, Nyakaina, Kasheshe, and Nyabitete, destroying crops such as bananas, cassava, potatoes, coffee, and beans, as well as affecting livestock, leaving residents desperate and at risk of hunger.
Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the LC3 Chairperson of Buyanja Sub County, consoled the affected families and criticized the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness for not responding to their earlier petitions. He urged the government and Members of Parliament to intervene immediately with relief food and seedlings to prevent a worsening crisis.

Nyansio Kamugisha, the Councilor for Nyakaina Parish, expressed concern that residents are increasingly distressed due to the lack of support and service delivery. He called on top leaders to step in and prevent a full-blown hunger crisis.
Kurineriyo Bakacwa, the LC1 Chairperson of Kihengamo, emphasized that agriculture is the primary source of income for the area, and the hailstorms have wiped out their livelihood. He urged Members of Parliament to unite and provide solutions for the affected communities.
Justus Kweyamba, an elder from Kafunjo Kyogo, stressed the urgency of supplying relief food and seedlings, highlighting that the food security crisis is worsening with no crops left for harvest.
Evalyn Ahimbisibwe Mwongyera, a resident of Kafunjo Kyogo, shared her frustration after investing 120,000 UGX in seedlings and 150,000 UGX in renting land, only for her gardens to be destroyed by the hailstorms. She appealed for government support to recover her losses.
Similarly, Alex Namanya Kiwenge from Kihengamo expressed his frustration over losing an agriculture loan due to the hailstorm and called for immediate assistance to mitigate the financial losses caused by the disaster.
Local leaders are urging a swift government response to prevent the region from falling into a severe hunger crisis.
