Ongoing land disputes and domestic violence have significantly hindered economic development and led to family breakdowns in Bugangari Sub-County, Rukungiri District. In response, responsible technical teams continue to carry out sensitization efforts in local communities.

According to Florence Tusingwiire, the Community Development Officer (CDO) of Bugangari, domestic violence cases in the area are often linked to land conflicts, excessive alcoholism, poverty, and child neglect. She urged married couples to cooperate, work together, and prioritize both academic and moral education for their children. She also criticized men for neglecting their responsibility in supporting their children’s education.

Tusingwiire emphasized that land disputes remain the primary challenge in the community, sometimes even resulting in loss of life. She called on Boona FM to assist in sensitizing local communities and warning residents about the impact of these conflicts on their families and the community’s development.

Bugangari Sub-County GISO, Mr. Onzo Kakesa, echoed these concerns, stating that authorities have prioritized community sensitization to address the issue. He commended the LC3 local court for its role in resolving conflicts and delivering justice. He also urged parents to draft wills with trusted individuals to prevent property-related disputes and called on religious leaders to educate their congregations on the importance of peaceful coexistence.

LC3 Chairperson Jaston Byamukama acknowledged the severity of the situation and condemned land wrangles, particularly those that emerge after the death of parents, in cases of orphaned children, and due to the undermining of women’s committees. He urged residents to use family clan structures to resolve disputes instead of taking cases to court unnecessarily.
