The Leaders of Nyundo sub-county in Kisoro district have announced measures to address the issue of dogs attacking and killing sheep in the area.

Ntakirutimana Christine, the Nyundo Sub County Chief, stated that a collaborative plan has been devised with the District Production officer and the District Veterinary Officer to address the problem effectively.

The plan involves trapping and eliminating stray dogs using poison bait.

To ensure the safety of the remaining sheep, all sheep owners have been advised to keep their animals at home and avoid letting them roam freely in the forests for a minimum of two weeks. This precautionary measure will be implemented until the operation to eliminate the stray dogs is completed.

The decision to take action against the stray dogs follows a recent incident in which 91 sheep were killed by dogs in Nyundo.

Fred Mutambuzi Kanyaruju, the Nyundo LC III Chairperson, emphasized that the dog attacks on sheep are not limited to Nyundo alone, as dogs from neighboring sub-counties such as Bukimbiri and Nyakabande also pose a threat. Hence, all concerned parties need to address this issue collectively.

However, the announcement of the operation to hunt down and eliminate stray dogs in Nyundo Sub County has gained mixed reactions from various LC I chairpersons in the region. Our reporter interviewed several LC I chairpersons, who expressed diverse opinions regarding the two-week operation.
