The Kigezi Zone USSSA Chairperson has urged referees, coaches, and players to uphold unity and discipline ahead of the Kigezi Sub-region USSSA U20 Boys Football Championship, which kicks off on Friday 10th April 2026 at Makobore High School in Rukungiri Municipality.
A total of 23 out of the expected 27 school teams have already confirmed participation and reported to the host venue, where the USSSA secretariat has been conducting player screening, finalizing fixtures and draws, and allocating playing grounds.
Speaking to Boona Radio, Chairperson Mr. Rukundo Onesmus Ruririhoona expressed confidence in the region’s readiness to successfully host the tournament. He, however, issued a strong warning to referees against engaging in bribery and called on all stakeholders to maintain integrity, professionalism, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
He emphasized that discipline and unity among players and coaches are key to nurturing talent and advancing football development in Kigezi and the wider Western Uganda region.
The tournament will follow a knockout progression from the group stages through to the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final. The final match is scheduled for Sunday at Rukungiri Main Stadium, which will only be used for that purpose due to its current poor condition following a recently concluded trade show.
Matches will be played across four venues:
- Makobore High School playground (Groups A and B)
- Buyanja Town Council playground (Groups C and D)
- Kebisoni Sub-county playground (Groups E and F)
- Rumbugu playground (Groups G and H)
Teams have been drawn into eight groups (A–H), with some groups consisting of three teams and others four, following a round-robin format within each group.
Rukungiri District has registered the highest number of participating schools, with all six teams present and ready for the competition. In contrast, Rubanda District has the lowest representation, with only three teams confirmed at the tournament.
The championship promises exciting competition as schools battle for regional glory while showcasing emerging football talent.
