John Kakama, a 20-year-old student at Kigezi High School, began his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams today, writing with his feet under the new competency-based curriculum. Born without arms and hailing from Ntungamo District, Kakama is among 108 students sitting for their UCE examinations at the school.

When our reporter visited, Kakama was well-prepared for his first mathematics exam, equipped with all the necessary materials. He attributes his academic journey to God’s grace and describes reaching this milestone as a remarkable experience. With confidence in his performance, he credits the training and preparation he has received for his success.

Orphaned at a young age, Kakama currently resides at a Child Development Centre in his home district. He dreams of becoming a lawyer and aspires to one day serve as Chief Justice, trusting in God’s guidance to help him achieve his goals.

Abraham Akampurira, head teacher of Kigezi High School, praised Kakama, calling him a unique student whose success is inevitable.

Monday 14th October 2024, marks the beginning of exams for the first cohort of Senior Four students under the new lower secondary curriculum, which was introduced in 2021. According to the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB), a total of 379,629 students are registered for the exams, which will conclude on November 15.
