Kiganga Primary School, situated in Kiganga village, Nyabushenyi Sub County in Rukungiri district, is facing a critical situation with a severe shortage of classrooms. Established in the early 1980s, this government-aided school, once a source of pride for the community, is now on the brink of collapse.
Despite its rich history of producing prominent individuals, the school is in a dismal state, with approximately 300 students attending classes in deteriorating semi-permanent structures erected by parents over three decades ago. These structures are no longer deemed safe for use by the students.
Presently, concerned parents are appealing to the government to address the dire condition of Kiganga Primary School before the commencement of the upcoming term. The school holds a significant role in the community, being the sole educational institution in the area, with alternative schools located miles away.
Expressing his distress, Tweyambe Asaph, a concerned citizen, accuses the government of neglecting its duty to support the school’s development. He urges the district of Rukungiri and the broader government leadership to intervene promptly and renovate the school, emphasizing the potential dangers faced by students if the dilapidated classrooms are not addressed.
Adding to the plea, Himbisa Richard, a parent from the same school, acknowledges the government’s effort in constructing toilets, a crucial improvement for the health and well-being of both teachers and students. However, he urges the government to extend its attention to the overall renovation of the school. Richard emphasizes the importance of providing a safe and conducive learning environment to prevent parents from resorting to enrolling their children in private schools due to fears of potential hazards associated with the collapsing classrooms.
