Parents and school administrators at Kayanga Primary School in Nyarushanje Subcounty have expressed frustration over the prolonged neglect of their school by authorities.
Led by Niwagaaba Dinavence and Annah Kyomuhangi, parents described the deteriorating state of the school buildings as a major hazard.
They said that during the rainy season, pupils are sent home at the first signs of rain because the buildings leak, raising fears that they could collapse.
The poor infrastructure has greatly affected the learning experience, forcing some pupils to transfer to other schools.
The parents criticized leaders for failing to support and prioritize education at Kayanga Primary School, saying this neglect is jeopardizing their children’s future and hindering the development of the area.
Robert Twinomujuuni, the headteacher of Kayanga Primary School, expressed deep concern over the situation. He noted that since the school’s establishment in 1948, it has relied solely on parent-constructed buildings, with no government support.
He emphasized that the dilapidated buildings put pupils at great risk, especially during the rainy season, as the worn-out roofs allow water to leak through.
The structures, built with mud, are on the verge of collapse.
The headteacher called on the Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities to urgently address the infrastructure crisis to ensure the safety of both pupils and teachers at Kayanga Primary School.
