As a way to eradicate theft that has been a challenge in Buhunga Sub-county for so long, residents have resorted to putting security measures in place, such as raising funds to buy streetlights and empowering village security committees, among other measures.

Yesterday, residents in Karisizo Trading Center thronged Buhunga Sub-county headquarters, where they raised 2.4 million shillings to support the campaign of installing streetlights in their trading center, Karisizo.

Niwabiine Julius, the area councilor for Buhunga Parish, who introduced the idea of this fundraising, said that as a trading center, they are facing a challenge of thieves who break into traders’ shops and even intercept residents on their way, hence the need for these streetlights.

He hailed the authorities in Buhunga for blessing this idea, noting that if it becomes a success, it will be a development for all.

Herbart Tumwijukye, the chairperson of Karisizo Trading Center, confirmed that residents are grappling with theft, especially when electricity is not available.

He said that the 2.4 million shillings collected might enable them to buy about 5 streetlights out of the 10 they are planning to install.

Tumwijukye added that they are committed to embracing all measures that can support security in their area.

The function witnessed a pledge of two streetlights from the Rujumbura County MP, who was supposed to be the guest of honor.

Benon Mugisha, the LC3 Chairperson for Buhunga Sub-county, hailed residents for embarking on securing their area through the purchase of streetlights.

He, however, urged them to also implement other security measures such as forming security committees and protecting their properties.

He called on people in other trading centers to also embrace such campaigns, noting that communal work is not only about improving roads and bridges but also doing anything that can improve living standards in communities.
