In a landmark step towards a peaceful resolution of a longstanding land dispute, the family of the late Kanyamukwara from Kigarama Cell, Nyamirama Sub-County in Kanungu District, has chosen to seek justice through the courts rather than resort to conflict.
The family claims their ancestral land—estimated at 150 acres and currently occupied by government institutions, including a school and a coffee processing facility—was wrongfully taken over despite their documented ownership dating back to 1973. This land, acquired during the era of Rukungiri District, became a point of contention following political unrest between UPC and DP, which led to the family’s displacement.
Now, as a new generation of the Kanyamukwara family rises to reclaim their heritage, they are turning to the judicial system—a sign of growing public trust in legal institutions.
“We bought this land in 1973 and have all the documents. Now that our children have grown, we are returning to reclaim what is rightfully ours,” said a family representative.
Despite previous unsuccessful mediation efforts by the office of the RDC and Nyamirama Town Council, the family has remained committed to a peaceful process. Their approach has been welcomed by officials such as Kanungu District Lands Officer Emmanuel Eloku, who confirmed that his office awaits court guidance, and RDC representative Mugisha Zepher, who called for calm and patience from all sides.
