Kanungu Resident District Commissioner, Ambrose Mwesigye, urged the youths to keep politics out of progress. He made the remarks yesterday while addressing the youths and women at “The NRM Abazukulu for Parish Development Model–Kigezi Chapter” piggery site in Ibambiro Cell, Kihihi Sub-county, Kanungu District.
According to the RDC, politicizing development projects, especially those that are government-funded, has become a major challenge affecting the development of the district. He therefore urged the youths to keep politics out of progress. Moreover, Ambrose acknowledged that he is committed to following up and ensuring that the President’s pledge of 30 million shillings, made on 6th June 2025 while launching the project, is secured to support further advancements.
Similarly, Nkwasibwe Godwin, the Kanungu District Production Officer, commended the project leaders for having such a vision, noting that it will help improve livelihoods across the Kigezi region. He challenged the youths to embrace saving and investing. Furthermore, Godwin advised the project leaders to diversify into other projects such as poultry and dairy, noting that while the piggery project appears productive, not everyone is interested in it.
Turihabwe Hillary, the chairperson of “The NRM Abazukulu for PDM Kigezi Chapter,” revealed that the umbrella was established to embrace the President’s program of empowering the youths through initiatives like PDM. Moreover, the umbrella has given out piglets to youths and women across 27 sub-counties in Kanungu District and plans to expand to other districts in the Kigezi region.
However, Hillary highlighted some challenges, including lack of water at the site, insecurity, lack of enough land for expansion, and inadequate capital to invest in the project, calling for government support.
Meanwhile, Ashaba Apollo Christopher, one of the beneficiaries from Nyabugando Cell, Ngaruka Parish, Bwambara Sub-county, Rukungiri District, commended the project leadership for uniting the youths and expressed optimism that the piglets given to them will help improve their household incomes.
“The NRM Bazukulu for PDM–Kigezi Chapter” was formed on 5th June 2024 in Kanungu District and later launched on 6th June 2025 by the President of the Republic of Uganda under the stewardship of the Minister of ICT and National Guidance and MP for Kinkiizi East, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi. The main aim of the umbrella is to empower youths and women across the Kigezi region through development projects like piggery. So far, it owns a piggery breeding site on government land in Ibambiro Cell, Kihihi Sub-county.
