The territorial police in Kanungu are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 26-year-old Brian Tumwesigyire, a resident of Murehe “B” village, Kakyinga parish, Bugongi sub-county, Kanungu district.

Tumwesigyire allegedly died after being struck on the head with a panga by Martin Kamugisha, 30, a resident of the same area. Kamugisha claimed he acted out of provocation after Tumwesigyire and others hit him with a stone, causing severe bleeding. Kamugisha is currently admitted to Kambuga Hospital under police guard.

The incident reportedly occurred on July 5, 2024, at around 23:00 hours. As Kamugisha was walking home, he was stoned from behind. When he turned to see what was happening, he was hit on the right side of his nose, causing him to bleed heavily. In retaliation, he chased the assailants and inflicted a deep cut on Tumwesigyire’s head.

Both men agreed to treat their injuries themselves. Subsequently, Kamugisha reported an assault case at Bugongi police post, while Tumwesigyire went home and did not inform his parents of the incident.

The following morning, on July 6, 2024, Tumwesigyire’s parents found him in his room and rushed him to Kambuga Hospital, where he died before receiving treatment. Police were notified of his death, and a postmortem was conducted. Kamugisha was arrested at the hospital, where he remains under guard while receiving treatment. Investigations are ongoing.
