Kanungu district yesterday joined the rest of the World to celebrate World Water Day with celebrations held at Omukatusi playground in Bugongi Sub-County under the theme ” Accelerating change to solve water and sanitation crisis”.
Presiding over the celebrations, Henry Mwongyera the Kanungu District Vice Chairperson said the numbers of families with hand washing facilities are still low according to statistics provided by the health department and implored locals for more efforts in that area, he called upon local leaders to forward names of those who do not have latrines for action to be taken.
Tweheyo David Betega Kanungu district chief Administrative Officer decried the bad trend of open defecation where statistics are very disturbing.
He said the trend has led to a number of diseases that have claimed lives especially those of young children, he emphasized the role of the public in environmental protection especially in securing water sources and tree planting.
Byamukama Francis the secretary for works and technical services called upon the public to identify sources of water and protect them informing them that the water office has a form to be filled out by LC1 Chairpersons for source protection.
Eng. Erick Mutumba the district water Engineer said Kanungu district has since injected 35% of its water budget for the financial year 2022/2023 into Bugongi for water extension because it’s one of the water-stressed areas and his target is for 20,000 People to be availed with safe water this financial year.
Josephine Byereta LC111 Chairperson Bugongi subcounty lauded Kanungu district local government for water extension in Bugongi which is currently at 80%, and encouraged people to apply for water extension in their areas.
At the same function households and schools that excelled in the sanitation and hygiene competition from both Bugongi and Buhoma Town Council were awarded.
