A 30-year-old man has been killed in Kanungu District after being accused of injuring goats belonging to a resident of Muramba Parish, Mpungu Sub County.
The deceased, identified as Sorobina Kabangari, a peasant and resident of Kyambeya Cell, reportedly admitted to injuring two goats owned by Twinomugisha Edisa. The case was first reported to the area LC II Chairperson, Kahunyira Nado, who mobilized locals and tied up Kabangari before escorting him to Mpungu Police Station.
On the way, near the home of a resident known as Bagyenyi, Kabangari allegedly revealed that it was Bagyenyi who had given him the panga used in the act. This confession is said to have enraged Bagyenyi, who allegedly attacked Kabangari with a panga, cutting him several times on the head. Kabangari collapsed and died instantly.
Police in Kigezi Region, through spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, noting that the body was taken to Mpungu Health Centre IV for postmortem. The scene was processed and documented, and statements recorded.
Authorities have since arrested the LC II Chairperson to aid investigations, while the prime suspect, Bagyenyi, is currently on the run.
ASP Maate condemned the act, urging the public to always hand over suspects to police for proper investigations instead of resorting to mob justice.
“Inquiries are still ongoing,” he said.
