Health experts in Rukungiri district have cautioned the public to take good care of bedridden patients to prevent the development of bedsores, which can cause serious health complications if neglected.

Speaking to our reporter, Rukungiri District Health Educator Alban Natukunda explained that bedsores often affect patients who remain in one position for long periods of time, particularly those suffering from stroke, accident victims, and the elderly whose body parts are more vulnerable.

He noted that patients who spend long hours lying in one place without assistance are at a high risk of developing bedsores. These wounds, once infected with germs, can spread and cause further illnesses.

Natukunda urged caretakers to help patients change their sleeping positions every two hours, and to frequently change beddings, since wet or dirty beddings contribute heavily to the development of bedsores.

He also emphasized the importance of keeping patients clean and dry, pointing out that preventive care is much cheaper than treating wounds once they develop.

Meanwhile, Dr. Alex Twekwase, Director of Bukiriro Clinic, also confirmed to our reporter that bedsores are serious wounds that usually affect bedridden patients for two or more days. He cited accident victims and diabetic patients as some of the most vulnerable groups.

Dr. Twekwase revealed that bedsores commonly develop on body parts such as the elbow, kneecap, and gluteus due to constant pressure.

He advised caretakers in both hospitals and homes to support patients with simple physical exercises such as walking, to improve blood circulation. He also recommended applying powder to affected body parts to reduce friction.

Additionally, Dr. Twekwase stressed the importance of maintaining proper hygiene, using clean beddings, and ensuring patients receive a balanced diet rich in body-building foods.
