Residents and local leaders in Rutenga Subcounty, Kanungu District, decry the incomplete roadworks on the Rutenga–Mafuuga–Nyamasizi road, which continue to hinder economic development in the district.
Speaking to Boona FM, the councilor representing Mafuuga Parish, Mr. Banard Bakesigaki, expressed disappointment over the district’s poor road connectivity, questioning the failure to properly implement and complete road projects despite the district receiving funding.
Banard revealed that he has several times raised his concerns in council meetings, but nothing has been done.
He noted that the road was initially worked on halfway—from Katindo Karuhanga to Omukyashamiro—which is only 5.8 km, leaving the remaining 6 km from Omukyashamiro to Nyamasizi undone.
Banard added that despite holding the groundbreaking for the remaining 6 km on 14th May 2025, nothing has been done since then, and all the machines were taken away. Road users are now facing challenges in the area.
Another resident, Nasiima Andrew, a boda boda rider, also said that the Rutenga–Mafuuga–Nyamasizi road was constructed without culverts, and water has broken the road, making it impassable even before a year has passed since it was worked on.
He also expressed his frustration with the district local government’s continued failure to construct and complete its roads.
He noted that it is too expensive for someone traveling from Mafuuga to Kabale because they have to use other routes, especially the Kerere road, instead of the Nyamasizi road, which is in a very poor state.
In response, the district councilor representing Rutenga Subcounty, Hon. Broosa Ainembabazi, acknowledged the challenges the people of Mafuuga are facing due to the unfinished road, saying that it was supposed to be completed by June. However, the whole district of Kanungu has only one machine.
He said the machines that are supposed to be working on this road are still working on another road in Kanungu, but very soon, once that road is done, the machines will begin work on the Mafuuga–Nyamasizi road.
He asked residents to be patient, assuring them that before the end of July, their road will have been worked on.
