Authorities in Kanungu District have resolved to petition the Executive Director of Uganda National Roads Authority Ms Allen Kagina to respond to the rampant accidents on the Rukungiri – Ishasha Kanungu tarmac Road that is under construction.
This was revealed on Friday by the Kinkizi West Member of Parliament Hon James Rugi Kaberuka while addressing mourners at the sendoff service of a 4 days old baby who died in an accident when the CHICO construction company truck UAZ 392S rammed into a house in Kanungu.
It’s alleged that on Thursday at 11:00PM, the vehicle Beiben Orange that was carrying sand lost control after the driver slept off and knocked three houses along the road which led to the death of a driver one Masereka Eric 43 Mukonjo by tribe a resident of Bikurungu Town Council Rukungiri district, and a baby from Kishaka cell Ntungwa parish Nyamirama town council Rukungiri and injured other seven people who were asleep.
Locals attributed the increased accidents on the road to poor mechanical conditions of the trucks, working overtime and sturbon drivers.
Tukwasiibwe Martin, a resident of Kashojwa cell, Kibimbiri parish, Kanungu Sub-county, Kanungu district attributed the accident to reckless driving and driving trucks that are in poor mechanical conditions.
They allege that most of the trucks do not have brakes and head lights yet they work full night which makes some of the drivers work drive recklessly.
Hon James Rugi Kaberuka ordered the traffic police to ensure traffic rules on the road and given locals 2 weeks to compile their challenges brought about by the construction of the road to forward them to the Executive Director of Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) for attention.
The Kanungu Resident District Commissioner Ambrose Mwesigye attributed the cause of the increased accidents to reckless driving and assured that authorities will be sensitive on the drivers, ensure that road safety and traffic rules on the road are followed.
He cautioned police against watching over the bad driving on this raod and urged them not to concetrate on Boda boda riders asking them driving permits when there are other serious things to attend to.
Kanungu-Ishasha road project, started in 2018 and almost 5 people have been killed on this road.
Effeorts to get a comment from CHICO construction company officials were futile after repeated unaswered calls.
