Buroosa Ainembabazi, the Kanungu district councilor representing Rutenga subcounty, expressed concern over the poor academic performance in schools, particularly highlighted by the disappointing PLE results of 2023. Rutenga subcounty reported a lack of first-grade performances and 12 ungraded pupils.
Buroosa attributed this decline in academic achievement to several factors, including high rates of teacher and pupil absenteeism, delayed reporting of learners for new terms, and inadequate parenting. The failure of parents to provide essential scholastic materials and meals for their children has created an environment where learning is perceived as burdensome rather than enjoyable.
Furthermore, Buroosa emphasized that some parents keep their children at home during the beginning of the term, engage them in non-educational activities such as agricultural vending, or prioritize work over attending school. Even in cases where parents support their children to register for national exams, some students remain absent from classes, opting to work instead.
To address these challenges, Buroosa called for increased efforts from local leaders and school management committees to mobilize and educate parents about the significance of education and their role in their children’s success. He stressed the need for a collective effort in sensitizing the community.
Additionally, Buroosa highlighted concerns about teacher accountability, noting instances of teacher absenteeism, late arrivals, and intentional skipping of lessons. This further contributes to the overall decline in academic performance.
In conclusion, Buroosa urged for a collaborative approach involving parents, teachers, local leaders, and school management committees to address the issues at hand and improve the educational outcomes for students in Rutenga subcounty.
