The Kanungu district council convened yesterday, Monday, February 26th, 2024, but ended abruptly due to concerns raised by the Councilors regarding the perceived failure of the district technical staff to execute council resolutions.

The decision to adjourn came following communication from the district chairperson highlighting stalled government projects despite available funds.

During the session, Councilors directed their queries toward the district technical staff, led by the absent district chief administrative officer. In his absence, the principal assistant secretary, Gertrude Mutahakana, represented the CAO but couldn’t provide satisfactory answers to the Councilors’ concerns.

This lack of response prompted mixed reactions among the Councilors, leading them to request the speaker to suspend the council until the technical team could address why they consistently failed to implement council resolutions.

Councilor Joshua Rukundo of Nyanga sub-county and Rogers Tumwesigye of Kihihi town council expressed frustration over the hindrance their efforts faced due to the failure of resolution implementation.

However, some Councilors, such as Honorable Immaculate Birungi, opposed the suspension, citing other pressing district matters to address.

While the Kanungu Resident District Commissioner, Ambrose Mwesigye, suggested continuing the council to resolve the issue, the Councilors opted to adhere to the suspension.

Frank Byaruhanga, the Kanungu district speaker, clarified that the council’s decision to suspend was based on the Councilors’ consensus, announcing an ultimatum of one week for the district technical team to respond to the raised concerns.

Eng. Sam Arineitwe, the Kanungu district chairperson, emphasized that numerous resolutions passed by the council must be executed by the technical team, stating that Councilors would explore other options if compliance isn’t met.
