The Kanungu district fisheries department has provided training to fish farmers on fertilizing fish to enhance their yields and increase income.
This training took place at the district youth pond in Bugongo cell, Nyakatunguru ward, Kihihi town Council.
Edgar Wako, the district fisheries officer, explained the process, which involves extracting sperm and brain from male fish to be injected into female fish, stimulating egg production.
The fertilized eggs are then harvested after slaughtering the female fish and placed in water with optimal temperatures to hatch fingerlings.
The fish farmers expressed gratitude for the training, recognizing it as a solution to a major challenge they have faced.
Godwin Nkwasibwe, the district production officer, encouraged farmers to dedicate themselves to fish farming, assuring them of government support with free fish fry for youth and affordable fry for others ready to start fish ponds.
Mbabazi Davis, the district youth councilor, mentioned that previous issues among the youth are being addressed by relevant government authorities.
The district youth farming project, initially funded by President Museveni to support Kanungu District youth, involved the construction of ponds and buildings at the fish site.
Currently, management of the project has been handed over to the district local government production department due to the youth’s inability to manage it effectively.
