Residents of Kamuganguzi Sub-county in Kabale District have expressed frustration over the persistent lack of electricity and access to safe water—issues they say have hindered development in their communities for years.

Speaking to our reporter ahead of the 2026 general elections, the residents accused their leaders of ignoring their concerns, leaving villages without essential services.

Denis Rwamunahe, the LC1 Chairperson of Nyakabungo Village in Katenga Parish, said the community urgently needs electricity extended from Omubuhasha Trading Centre to Katenga Primary School. He noted that the absence of power has left many youth idle, yet they could be involved in income-generating activities such as welding. Rwamunahe added that families spend more than three hours at the nearest water source, a situation he described as unacceptable.

Enos Turihohabwe from Bwiranyi Village also criticized area leaders for failing to respond to the needs of the people, while William Zinshanga of Kakyangara Village in Kicumbi Parish said the lack of electricity has affected local businesses, with leaders repeatedly making promises that are never fulfilled. Fortunate Tukamushaba from Kashenyi Village echoed the same concerns, saying the absence of power has even affected social life, especially for residents who enjoy watching soccer on television.

Meanwhile, Kabale Woman Member of Parliament aspirant Grace Ankunda Bekunda Bwesigye, who is campaigning in Kamuganguzi this week, expressed concern over the severe water challenges in the area despite its proximity to Lake Bunyonyi. She pledged to advocate for improved water access and rural electrification if elected, urging residents not to sell their votes but to support leaders based on their manifestos.

Bwesigye also called on the government to lower the age limit for beneficiaries of the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) from 80 to 70 years. She noted that many elderly people in communities are struggling and deserve government support. Currently, the SAGE program provides a monthly grant of UGX 25,000 to senior citizens aged 80 and above.
