Concerns are mounting among parents, local leaders, and the school administration of Kahoko Primary School in Kahoko Parish, Nyakajeme Sub County, Rukungiri District, regarding the deteriorating condition of the school.

Silver Tumwebaze, the Chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), expressed distress over the sorry state of the school, citing issues such as dusty floors, lack of windows, leaking roofs, cracked walls, and worn-out timber. Additionally, the school’s toilets are supported by wooden pillars, and with an enrollment of 493 pupils, there is only one toilet for both students and teachers.

Tumwebaze emphasized that the government has neglected the school, leaving the burden of maintenance on the shoulders of financially strained parents. Despite the efforts of parents, who have fulfilled their responsibilities, there are still challenges, including some parents failing to pay school fees.

He appealed to the government to enhance education standards in the area by establishing proper facilities. Venansi Bakazaagwa, the Headteacher of Kahoko Primary School, lamented that since its establishment in 1944, the government has not contributed to any infrastructure at the school. The dire condition of the buildings raises concerns about potential collapses during rainy weather, leaving students without adequate shelter.

Bakazaagwa highlighted the adverse impact of this situation on students’ academic performance, as the constant worry about rain impedes their concentration on studies. He also acknowledged the graduation ceremony of pre-primary level students and welcomed them to the primary level.

The guest of honor, Arthur Amperiize, the Rukungiri District Inspector of Schools, urged parents to actively support and protect their children during the extended holiday. He emphasized the importance of parents engaging in school renovation tasks and not solely relying on the government for support.

Really it’s quiet absurd to see that the structures we left there since 1992 up to now are still the same. The government should look into it.
