The Kabale District Health Department has reported a significant increase in malaria cases across the district, with at least 75 cases recorded in a week in the past three months.
The District Malaria focal person Edmond Kabyemera, states that during the 3rd Quarter of 2022/23, the district confirmed 1,133 positive cases out of 10,806 suspected malaria cases.
Kabyemera adds that the testing rate was 100%, resulting in a positivity rate of 10%.
Dr. Gilbert Arinaitwe Mateeka, the Kabale District Health Officer acknowledges that the current weekly count of 75 cases is still lower than the expected average. He said that they anticipate a rise in cases due to the ongoing rainy season.
To combat the escalating malaria situation, Dr. Mateeka highlighted that the department intends to roll out regular diagnosis, massive distribution of mosquito nets, and lava-siding to control mosquito breeding as various preventive measures.
