Authorities at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in Kabale District are protesting the delayed handover of a 7.8 billion shillings hostel for health workers and interns at the hospital, which has remained closed, a year after it was completed.
In May 2017, Government contracted Musuuza Building Contractors Limited, to undertake the works of the hostel and the contract expired on June 3, 2022. However, the Contractor has reportedly refused to hand over the project until the government pays an outstanding balance of 790 million shillings in extra costs.
Now, the Kabale Regional Referral Hospital Director Dr. Filbert Nyeko, and the Hospital Board Chairperson, Dr Ananias Muhunde said the delayed handover by the facility has left all the 40 intern doctors renting in town and other areas, which lack enough security.
The Kabale Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Andrew Ronald Bakaki, said he will petition the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the matter since the contractor and the Ministry of Health officials might be conniving to defraud the government.
The Commissioner for Communicable Disease Prevention and Control at the Health Ministry, Dr Patrick Tusiime, who visited the hospital early this week, denied any connivance between the ministry and the contractor and promised to table the matter before the ministry’s top management for discussion.
The Director of Musuuza Building Contractors Limited, Michael Musuuza declined to comment on the matter.
