The Kabale Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Nyakahuma has directed authorities at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital to provide transport means to health workers and intern doctors who work on night duty at the hospital.
This follows concerns raised by intern doctors that they have on several occasions been attacked and robbed while going back home from the hospital.
They have been calling for urgent intervention from the local, regional, and national authorities to address the security and accommodation challenges faced by the interns.
Nyakahuma told our reporter on Wednesday at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital interns hostel that they have so far registered three cases where intern doctors were attacked and properties taken and asked the hospital administration to arrange transport means for health workers and intern doctors on night duty so that they are protected and their properties.
Authorities at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital have been protesting against the delayed handover of the 7.8 billion shillings hostel for health workers and interns at the hospital, which has remained closed, a year after it was completed.
Musuza Building Contractors Limited earlier this year said they would not hand over the hostel until the government pays an outstanding balance of 790 million shillings, which the company reportedly incurred in extra costs.
