The territorial police in Kabale are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Aggrey Turiamwesimira, 38 years old, a resident of Kihoko cell, Muyebe parish, Buhara sub-county in Kabale district.
It is alleged that the deceased, reported to be a UPDF deserter, had attempted to commit suicide by setting himself on fire twice before.
On both occasions, bystanders swiftly intervened to extinguish the flames, and he received treatment at the hospital, recovering each time.
He had been residing at his parents’ house. On June 30, 2024, he reportedly woke up in the morning, attended church prayers, and then had lunch and supper with his mother. Later that day, he returned to his residence at an unspecified time.
Around 12:20 AM on July 1, 2024, Sarah, the wife of the deceased’s brother, heard sounds of burning from outside while in bed. Upon investigation, she discovered that the house where Aggrey resided was on fire. She immediately alerted the local chairman and neighbors for assistance. It was too late despite their efforts to break into the house and extinguish the fire.
Upon receiving reports, the Officer in Charge (O/C) of Buhara police station informed the district CID in Kabale.
A team of homicide detectives was dispatched to the crime scene on July 1, 2024. They retrieved the body from the burnt house and placed it in a coffin at the deceased’s parents’ compound. The scene of the crime was documented and photographed.
Relatives indicated they believed Aggrey had intentionally set himself on fire, and they did not suspect foul play. Consequently, the body was handed over to the family for burial arrangements.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
