The territorial police in Kabale are actively searching for a hit-and-run driver involved in a fatal road accident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured.

The tragic incident occurred around 5:00 AM at Mwanjari along the Kabale–Katuna highway in Kabale Municipality. The deceased has been identified as Naboth Owomugabe, a 20-year-old boda boda rider and resident of Nyakayenje Village, Bubare Sub County, Rubanda District. His passenger, Henry Byamukama, an 18-year-old mechanic from Kagarama Village in Rubanda, survived with serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.

According to police reports, a motor vehicle with registration number UA 325AL, believed to be a Toyota Premio, was heading from Kabale town towards Katuna when it recklessly overtook another vehicle. In the process, it knocked down the motorcycle that was coming from the opposite direction. Owomugabe died on the spot, while Byamukama sustained injuries.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the accident and remains unidentified. In a strange twist, the motorcycle involved in the crash was reportedly smuggled from the scene by unknown individuals and has not yet been recovered.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that the scene was visited and documented. A statement was obtained from the injured survivor, and investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect. Efforts are also ongoing to locate the vehicle involved and recover the missing motorcycle.

The deceased’s body was taken directly from the scene to his home for burial arrangements.

Police are urging members of the public with any information that may lead to the arrest of the driver or recovery of the vehicle and motorcycle to come forward.
