In a bold political move, Igara West Member of Parliament Hon. Mbwatekamwa Gafa Louis Rukamba has announced he will not seek re-election in Parliament, instead declaring his intention to contest for the position of Mayor of Mbarara City.

Mbwatekamwa made the declaration while meeting residents of Karugangama Cell in Katete Ward, Nyamitanga Division, Mbarara City South. He said his decision is driven by a strong desire to bring transparent and accountable leadership that delivers quality services to the people at the city level.

“It is unfortunate that some leaders fail to develop concrete plans and effectively utilize government funds due to lack of cooperation with technical teams. This is costing our people the services they deserve,” Mbwatekamwa stated.

He cited the stalled Lugazi-Katete Bridge project, initially budgeted at UGX 5 billion and tabled in Parliament by Mbarara City South MP Hon. Mwine Mpaka. Mbwatekamwa accused the current city leadership under Mayor Robert Kakyebezi of sabotaging the project by lobbying for less funding, leading to its failure. He added that the same funds could have also supported the repair of Kanyeite Bridge, whose timber structure is currently deteriorating.

As a self-proclaimed advocate for clean governance, Mbwatekamwa pledged to promote transparent use of public funds, especially in critical infrastructure development such as roads and bridges, to boost trade and communication.

“I will ensure every coin allocated for service delivery is accounted for. Public funds must reach the intended beneficiaries,” he said.

He also promised to address grievances over mismanaged burial funds in the mayor’s office. “Families mourning their loved ones must be supported with dignity. I will restore that respect,” he added.

Mbwatekamwa, who has often been branded a “rebel” within the ruling NRM party, said he stands firm against corruption. He claimed the government recently gave UGX 100 million to MPs who supported controversial proposals such as the coffee bill and trial of civilians in military courts—benefits he says he turned down due to his principles.

With a reputation for speaking out against injustice, Mbwatekamwa believes his track record will earn him public trust. “If given the mandate as Mayor, I will use that authority to ensure people’s needs are met through genuine service, not empty promises.”

The race for Mbarara City’s top political seat is already heating up, and Mbwatekamwa’s entry signals a shift that may redefine local leadership dynamics.
