Preparations for the World Press Freedom Day celebration scheduled for May 3rd, 2024, in Kabale District, are well underway, with an anticipated attendance of over 1000 individuals.

During a press conference held on Friday at the Agaba Center in Kigongi, Kabale municipality, in anticipation of the event, Job Namanya Apuuli, the Chairperson of the event’s steering committee, highlighted their decision to mark the day at the district level to unite journalists and initiate income-generating projects.

Apuuli announced plans to kick off the celebrations with a town cleanup on the eve of the event, followed by various activities on the day itself, such as launching the Journalists’ Association, tree planting, inaugurating the Kabale media fraternity offices, and engaging in football matches with media counterparts from Sheema and Kisoro districts, among other events.

Esther Ayebazibwe, Chairperson of the Kabale Media Practitioners Association to be inaugurated on the day, emphasized the association’s role in uniting media professionals to collaborate with academia on researching community issues and climate change, aligning with the theme “A Press for Planet: Journalism in the Face of Environmental Crisis.”

Andrew Agaba, advisor to the steering committee, disclosed that invitations have been extended to Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda, guest speaker Executive Director of Human Rights Network for Journalists Robert Ssempala, as well as all Ministers and Members of Parliament from the Kigezi region, who have confirmed their attendance.

Addressing the security measures for the event, Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, assured readiness to deploy appropriate security personnel to maintain peace and order during the celebrations, while also lauding the valuable contributions of journalists.
