Students at the Kabale Institute of Health Science in Kabale municipality are protesting due to the institution’s shortage of tutors and insufficient treatment services. Among those expressing dissatisfaction are Bridget Kyokusiima, Osbert Taremwa, Lilian Naturinda, and Fortunate Namanya.

They, along with others, are highlighting the inadequate educational environment that hampers their academic progress. Taking a decisive step, they marched to the office of Kabale’s Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Nyakahuma, earlier this week, demanding action.

Their main plea is to be connected with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board (UNMEB) to facilitate transfers to other institutions where they can continue their studies.

Elias Nankunda, the institute’s principal, acknowledges the legitimacy of the students’ grievances. However, he advises them to concentrate on their studies rather than pursuing transfers, suggesting that all nursing institutions follow the same curriculum.

Responding to the students’ complaints, Kabale Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Nyakahuma intervened yesterday. He uncovered a severe staff shortage at the institute, unable to meet the demands of its student body.

Additionally, he found that the administration failed to fulfill the services for which students have paid. Nyakahuma has mandated the institution to urgently address these issues to ensure students receive the services they are entitled to, particularly concerning placement.
