The Kabale Municipal Authorities have reversed their decision to charge vendors in Kabale Central Market occupancy rent for the past year, despite Minister for Local Government Raphael Magyezi granting a one-and-a-half-year exemption period.
This reversal comes after vendors protested against the compulsory and forced payment of 1.8 million shillings for the previous year.
The vendors argued that both the Municipal Authorities and Minister Magyezi had allowed them to operate rent-free until the corruption allegations surrounding space allocation were fully resolved.
Kabale Municipal Mayor Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha stated that after discussions with the Municipal Technical Leadership, they agreed that vendors would only need to pay for this month as per the minister’s directive.
