Former Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament, Rose Kabagyenyi, has picked up nomination forms from the NRM Secretariat to contest for the position left vacant by the late State Minister for Defence, Sarah Mateke. Kabagyenyi confirmed to our reporter that she collected the nomination forms on Tuesday to run on the NRM ticket. She previously lost the 2021 general elections to the late Sarah Mateke but was later appointed Senior Presidential Advisor in charge of Agriculture by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
In response to a resolution by the Kisoro District Council endorsing Ruth Nyiraneza Mateke as the sole candidate to replace the late Sarah Mateke, Kabagyenyi voiced her disagreement. She argued that the decision was influenced by mourners from various parts of the country, not by the Kisoro District Council. Kabagyenyi described the resolution as unconstitutional and inappropriate, emphasizing the importance of upholding the cultural values of the Bafumbira community.
Kabagyenyi also criticized the District Council for what she termed “dancing on the grave” of the late Sarah Mateke. She urged the council to let the electorate choose their leader, as they had done with the late Mateke. Kabagyenyi called for an apology from the Kisoro District Council on behalf of the Bafumbira and the nation for politicizing the special session that was meant to honor the late minister.
She further assured the people of Kisoro District that she would preserve the legacy of the late Sarah Mateke by completing the signature projects that Mateke had initiated during her tenure as Woman Member of Parliament.
According to Dr. Fred Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, aspiring candidates are required to submit their applications by September 30, 2024. The elections will also include the district woman councilor for the South Division, the municipal male councilor for older persons in the Northern Division, and the councilor for persons with disabilities, following the recent passing of the previous officeholders in the district.
