Hon. Naboth Namanya, the Member of Parliament for Rubabo County, has urged the public to separate the concept of death from age.
He made these remarks on Tuesday, 23rd September 2024, while addressing mourners at the funeral service of the late Desire Akankunda, an 18-year-old Senior Four candidate at St. Jerome Secondary School, Ndama, in Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri District.
Desire Akankunda, who passed away due to heart complications, was laid to rest at her parents’ ancestral home in Kitenga Cell, Garubunda Parish, Kebisoni Sub-County, Rukungiri District.
Hon. Namanya reminded mourners that everyone is mortal, stating that we are like God’s garden, where He can harvest at any time regardless of age. He encouraged mourners not to fear death but to accept it as part of life.
In his sermon, Archdeacon Amos Katushabe of Kakinga Archdeaconry advised parents to always share their children’s health issues with teachers to ensure proper care.
Bogere Francis, the father of the deceased, commended the administration of St. Jerome Secondary School for their prompt efforts in seeking medical care for his daughter, though it was too late. He also condemned the spread of false information following her death.
Alphonse Byamukama, the head teacher of St. Jerome Secondary School, described Desire Akankunda’s death as a significant loss to the school, both socially and academically.
Dina Akatukunda, the mother of the deceased, revealed that Desire was born with a condition of rapid heartbeats, which they struggled to manage, and the postmortem revealed heart enlargement.
