Security authorities destroyed 150 kilograms of underdeveloped Nile perch fish that were illegally smuggled and seized at the Kanaba Checkpoint in Kisoro District.

The incident occurred on January 6, 2024, and the confiscated cargo was incinerated in the presence of Deputy RDC Robert Tukamuhebwa and fisheries department officials at the district headquarters Friday evening.

Deputy RDC Tukamuhebwa mentioned that the police are actively investigating to identify the owner of the intercepted fish. He issued a strong warning to the business community, advising against engaging in the trade of mature fish. He stressed that the police, in collaboration with the fish protection unit, will make every effort to apprehend those participating in the illegal activity of trading immature fish to combat this issue effectively.

Birungi Denis, the Kisoro District Fisheries representative, expressed concern about the unacceptable condition of the confiscated fish, highlighting the potential threat to public health. He pledged to apprehend and take legal action against anyone found selling immature fish.
