Nyabusozi village in Nyamisinde parish, Masha sub-county, Isingiro district, was filled with hundreds of mourners from all walks of life as they gathered to bid a final farewell to the late Mzee Elia Katyongo, who passed away on Monday this week.

Born in 1922, Mzee Katyongo leaves behind a lasting legacy, survived by his wife, 12 children, 66 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was widely recognized as a prominent trader in hides and skins, a business he diligently pursued for many years.

Speaking at the ceremony, his son Mutambi Steven described their father as a caring, hardworking, and God-fearing man who valued education and instilled a strong work ethic in his children. He emphasized that their late father taught them the significance of diligence, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to combat poverty.

Mutungi John, the LC1 chairperson of Nyabusozi village, praised Mzee Katyongo for being a development-oriented resident who prioritized education, ensuring all his 12 children received formal schooling. He further lauded him as a peacemaker who played an active role in resolving disputes within the community.

During the funeral service, Bishop Onesimus Muramira of Global Healing Ministries urged mourners to uphold values of love, kindness, and prayer to attain the Kingdom of God. He called on the community to reject divisive behaviors such as domestic violence, alcoholism, and adultery, instead embracing virtues that foster unity and harmony.

The bishop also commended Mzee Katyongo’s unwavering dedication to his faith, describing him as a devout Christian who lived according to God’s will. His remarkable contributions to his family and community will be remembered for generations to come.
