Hon. Eddie Kwizera, the legislator for Bukimbiri County, has called on fellow politicians to avoid seeking votes in churches, emphasizing that churches are meant for spiritual, not political activities. He warned that such practices could alienate Christians from church.

Kwizera made these remarks during a fundraising event at Kashigye Catholic Church in Nyundo Parish, Kisoro District, where he was the chief guest. In his speech, he urged Christians to resist the intrusion of politics into church events, particularly fundraisers where some politicians exploit the occasion for political gain.

Hon. Kwizera also stressed the importance of respecting appropriate times for different activities, using burial ceremonies as an example where politics should not interfere with communal mourning.

At the event, Hon. Kwizera donated 1,000 timber planks for the church roof, purchased goods worth 3 million shillings, and completed the church’s beam work. Each attending priest received a gift from Hon. Kwizera as a token of appreciation for their service to the people of Bukimbiri County. His political opponent, represented by Fr. Fideris, contributed 100,000 shillings towards the same cause.

LCV Councilor Kirundo Sub County also supported Hon. Kwizera’s stance, condemning political activities in churches. He noted that such activities undermine church performance and demoralize congregants.

Councilor Kirundo further requested church leaders to refrain from praising or campaigning for politicians from the pulpit, as this tarnishes the church’s image.

The fundraising event successfully raised a total of 9 million shillings for the church roof.
