In a landmark development, Hon. Kamuntu Moses Mwongyera has inaugurated a new road that establishes a vital link between the Heisesero Tourism Centre and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, passing through the Iyamuriro (formerly Bjordal) Mine.
This project connects four key locations: Heisesero Tourism Centre, Iyamuriro Mine, Nshanjare Town Council, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
This newly constructed road addresses the previously impassable stretch from Heisesero, beginning at the major outlet of Lake Bunyonyi—Africa’s second-deepest lake—and extending to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The road eliminates the need for circuitous routes through Kisoro, Nkuringo, or Kanungu Ruhija, significantly simplifying access for tourists seeking gorilla tracking, which was once a challenging endeavor.
Historically, the Bjordal Mine, now Iyamuriro Mine, was established in the 1940s by a British investor who discovered rich Wolfram deposits. The area’s rugged terrain, including the formidable Rwamuyoora swamp, necessitated a floating bridge for transporting heavy loads. This bridge, though limited, was crucial for moving Wolfram to its destination.
The newly constructed road not only enhances accessibility to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, famous for its endangered gorilla population and diverse ecosystems but also connects Nshanjare Town Council, a hub of agricultural commerce, to the Heisesero Tourism Centre. The route now efficiently links the densely populated stretch of Heisesero, Karorwa COU, Iyamuriro Mine, Bisizo COU, and Nshanjare Town Council, facilitating the transportation of agricultural products like Irish potatoes to the Kaara Business Centre (Nyanamo Ya Tereza).
This development marks a significant achievement for the Kaara community, who previously relied on rudimentary means of transportation. The project, which was once deemed unfeasible by Hon. Denis Sabiti, has been successfully realized by Hon. Kamuntu Moses Mwongyera, affectionately known as Kafuro Webyemirimo.
Hon. Kamuntu Moses Mwongyera’s vision has now transformed local connectivity and economic opportunities, heralding a new era of accessibility and growth for the people of Rubanda District.
