Strong winds mixed with rainfall on Sunday blew off the roof of three classrooms at Rwamagaya Primary School in Ruhinda Sub County, Rukungiri district, a government-aided school.
According to Ronald Bayenzakyi, the head teacher of Rwamagana Primary School, the wind mixed with heavy rainfall which lasted about one hour started at 5 pm on Sunday and destroyed the roof of three classrooms among other school properties.
He says the block was old and in a poor state but parents, old students, and well-wishers were in plans to renovate it to provide more space for the increasing number of pupils at their school.
Fulugence Tugume Katungamo, the chairperson of the Schools’ Parents Teachers Association (PTA) says that none of the pupils was injured because it was during weekend time.
He, however, calls for government intervention to ensure that the school infrastructure is replaced in addition to constructing a new structure for them as they had requested the government.
According to Cledonia Clare Bakyiroda, the secretary for education in Rukungiri district, Rwamagaya Primary School is set to benefit from a capital development grant from the Government with about 150 million for the construction of three classroom blocks and plans are underway to begin the construction.
Engineer Julius Bagira the Rukungiri district engineer confirmed plans to construct a new classroom at Rwamagana Primary School explaining that binding is in process for the construction to begin in the third term.

Currently, the old boys of the school led by Mr. Ponsiano Ngabirano of Capital Shoppers are working around the clock to ensure that they conduct mega fundraising to reconstruct the school in a pattern ship with AbanyaRuhinda ba Bujumbura.
