A severe rainstorm on Wednesday night has caused significant crop destruction in Rukundo Town Council, Kisoro District, leaving residents anxious about potential famine. The downpour, which lasted nearly an hour, wreaked havoc on agricultural fields and some residential houses, with key crops such as cassava, beans, Irish potatoes, and cabbages being among the most affected.
Residents are now voicing their concerns, fearing for their survival as their livelihoods heavily rely on their harvests. Many are calling on the government, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders to intervene and provide immediate assistance to prevent a looming crisis.
In a statement, Nteziyaremye Lauben, the LC1 Chairperson of Kabande Village, one of the most severely impacted areas, lamented that such disasters occur frequently but are often met with little to no assistance from the authorities. He urged government offices to respond promptly to prevent the community from losing faith in them.
Meanwhile, Bahizi Fulugensi, the LCV Councilor for Rukundo Town Council, appealed for patience from the public, assuring them that the government is working in collaboration with other stakeholders to support those affected by the disaster.
