Residents of Rukungiri Municipality, Buyanja Sub County, Buyanja Town Council, Buhunga, and other areas of Rukungiri District are deeply concerned about a potential famine in the coming months due to a recent hailstorm.

The storm, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, caused significant damage to crops such as beans, banana plantations, cassava, and maize, leaving residents worried about the possibility of severe hunger ahead.

In Rukungiri Municipality, the most affected areas include Omukagashe, Nyamayenje, and Rwentondo, among others. In Buyanja Sub County, the hardest-hit regions are Rwenkuraijo, Kitanda, Mbunda, Kafunjo, and Rubanga.

Mugisha Benon Aunt, the LC3 chairperson of Buhunga Sub County, reported that Buhunga was also severely impacted by the hailstorm, particularly the areas of Kyaruyenje and Rusheeshe.

The storm also resulted in the deaths of several domestic animals, including goats, sheep, hens, and pigs.
