People who vacated wetlands in Bwambara sub-county Rukungiri district on Monday received 34 cows from the Ministry of Water and Environment as one way of the Government’s efforts to improve environment conservation in the district.
Rukungiri is one of the districts that was found to have destroyed the environment and was considered to benefit from the program to protect the environment.
Rukungiri district Senior Environment Officer Caroline Mbabazi also the district project focal person Resilient communities eco system and Associated catchments in Uganda charged the beneficiaries to take good care of the livestock because they are good breeds.
The government proposed to support people who vacated the wetland areas to have other income-generating projects like animal rearing rather than destroying the wetlands.
The 34 cows were distributed in 7 groups where 29 went to Bwambara and 5 in Bugangari subcounty respectively. The distribution happened at Bwambara sub-county headquarters.
The Rukungiri chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama commended the government for supporting people who vacated the wetlands by giving them animals, hence calling upon the beneficiaries to keep protecting the environment by using these wetlands as grazing areas.
He asked people who have not yet vacated the wetland to vacate so that they don’t miss the opportunity to benefit from such programs.
Chris Kagayano the Bwambara sub-county chairperson applauded the government for the efforts.
He revealed that the cows were an addition to 425 goats previously received from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
