Gen. Henry Tumukunde Clinches NRM Flag for Rukungiri Municipality MP Race
RUKUNGIRI – Gen. Henry Tumukunde has officially been declared the winner of the NRM party primaries for Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament, positioning him as the party’s flag bearer ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Tumukunde secured victory with 4,517 votes, accounting for 45.6% of the total valid ballots cast, defeating the incumbent MP, Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahirwa, who garnered 2,843 votes (28.7%).
The results were announced at 5:20 a.m. on July 18 by the Rukungiri NRM District Elections Officer, Mr. Bright Mwongyera, at the official tally center located in the Rukungiri District Council Hall.
Other contenders in the race included Isaac Atukunda, who received 1,658 votes (16.7%), Andrew Ankunda Kikira with 736 votes (7.4%), Nathan Kamugisha Akandwanaho with 101 votes (1.0%), and Kabano Apolo, who trailed with 49 votes (0.5%).
Mwongyera confirmed that a total of 9,905 valid votes were cast in the tightly contested race. The official declaration form was handed over to Tumukunde’s representative, Mr. George Owakukiroru, shortly after the announcement.
Vote counting for other positions, including Members of Parliament for Rujumbura and Rubabo constituencies, as well as the Woman MP slot, was still underway at the time of this report.
