Police in Rukungiri District have arrested four suspects in connection with the death of a 19-year-old woman, Wase Diana, following a violent altercation at a bar in Nyarushanje Sub County.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the tragic incident occurred on the night of Friday, July 11, 2025, at Nyarushanje Stage Cell in Ibanda Parish. The suspects, identified as Elikoze Zuwaheze (18), Mutesi Zane (17), Muhawenimana Kolodina (19), and Omutono Owase Pasikalina (19), are all Rwandan nationals working as bar attendants at a local drinking spot owned by one Kashaija.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were working together with the deceased when a disagreement arose over a matchbox used for smoking. Diana reportedly refused to hand it over, resulting in a confrontation that escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, she was allegedly struck around the neck, causing her to collapse.
She was initially rushed to St. Andrews Health Centre in Nyarushanje Trading Centre before being referred to Kisizi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police at Rubabo Station were immediately notified. Crime scene officers visited the location, gathered evidence, and initiated investigations. All four suspects were arrested and are currently in custody as inquiries continue.
“Upon completion of investigations, the suspects will be arraigned before the courts of law,” ASP Maate confirmed.
Police have urged residents to resolve disagreements peacefully and avoid taking matters into their own hands.
