North Kigezi Diocese, in collaboration with Rukungiri District Local Government, has officially transferred the former Rukungiri Primary Teachers College in Nyakaina Buyanja, Rukungiri District, to Kabale University.
This move was prompted by the Uganda National Teacher Policy (NTP) approved and launched in October 2019, leading to the phase-out of 22 Primary Teachers’ Colleges (PTCs) across Uganda, including Rukungiri PTC. Canon Sabiti Mahirane, the former North Kigezi Diocesan Head of Laity and the college’s Board of Governors Chairperson revealed that a consultative meeting was held on June 30, 2022, to discuss the transition of the college into a Kabale University branch.
On August 6, 2023, they received an acceptance letter from the Ministry of Education and Sports, allowing them to proceed. Mahiirane emphasized that the establishment of the Kabale University branch would positively impact education standards and the economy in North Kigezi Diocese.
Prof. Joy Kwesiga, the Vice Chancellor of Kabale University, expressed gratitude to the North Kigezi Diocesan and district authorities for the smooth transition, noting that they are awaiting a letter from the National Council for Higher Education to commence activities at Nyakaina. She outlined their plan to initially prioritize education, given the site’s history as a teachers’ college, before expanding to other courses.
Geoffrey Kyomukama, the Rukungiri District Chairperson, commended the Ministry of Education for approving the transformation and encouraged the people of Rukungiri to seize the opportunity, anticipating positive changes in both education and the economy.
Officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, including the Principal Education Officer/University Training and the Commissioner of Teacher Education Dr. Annet Mugisha, attended the event.
The North Kigezi Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe stressed the importance of discipline, especially since the university will operate on Church land.
