Police in Rukiga have arrested five individuals in connection with the alleged malicious destruction of a banana plantation in Nyakitabire Cell, Rwenyangye Parish, Kamwezi Sub-county. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 18, 2024, involved the slashing of 146 banana plants belonging to Madam Mary Kihembo Kibahigire.

The suspects, identified as Aruho Lawrence (45), Namanya Promise (37), Tindimwebwa Baker (38), Ndabwine Hilary (38), and Tumuranze Laban (38), were taken into custody following the discovery of the damaged crops by workers patrolling the farm at around 7:30 AM. Upon seeing the extensive damage, the workers promptly informed Madam Kibahigire, who immediately notified Kamwezi Police Station.

Officers from Kamwezi Police, alongside a team from Rukiga Central Police Station (CPS), quickly responded to the scene and documented the incident. Investigations are ongoing, with statements recorded from the farm’s workers.

The land where the damage occurred has been at the center of a long-standing legal dispute between Madam Kibahigire and the Nyakitabire community, who have been embroiled in a court case over land ownership since 2020. Both parties have accused one another of land theft, fueling tensions in the area.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and emphasized the importance of patience as the court case continues. “We are advising both parties to avoid any acts of lawlessness and await the court’s ruling,” he said.

In light of the incident, the district security committee has scheduled a community engagement meeting for Monday, October 21, 2024, to address these tensions and seek a peaceful resolution.

Police investigations remain underway.
