Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed after a fire gutted the stores of Remmy Supplies Shop in the center of Ntungamo town on Wednesday afternoon.
The stores, owned by Ms. Regina Karibwende Kinyatta, a Mukwano Industries dealer in Ntungamo, were severely affected. Ms. Regina also serves as the NRM party district secretary for communications and publicity.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire originated from an electrical short circuit at a milk cooler housed in the same building as the store and a SACCO. The fire spread to the roof and other rooms filled with various products. Several items, including soap, cooking oil, plastics, and paper, were destroyed.
Ms. Regina stated that she had not yet established the total value of the property lost. The police fire brigade, with the help of local residents, managed to extinguish the fire before it could cause further damage. However, over a third of the products had already been destroyed by the time the fire was brought under control.
The police at the scene declined to comment on the incident. The district police commander was reportedly in the field assessing the preparedness of police stations and posts for the upcoming election period. However, a police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to address the press, stated that an investigation into the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage was underway, with a detailed report expected soon.
