Pastors in various churches have been urged to make effective use of parish land to generate income for themselves and support their congregants, enabling them to avoid dependency and gain respect from the people they lead.
This call was made by Rev. Nathan Nkuranga, the parish priest of St. Mark Church of Uganda in Kishami Parish, during an interview with journalists while selling onions he had grown himself at Ntungamo Open Market.
Rev. Nkuranga emphasized that many church and mosque leaders are entrusted with land but fail to utilize it productively, instead relying on their congregants to provide for them through offerings and tithes.
He highlighted his own example, using church land to cultivate onions, which he is now marketing. He encouraged leaders from all denominations to follow suit by utilizing available land to support their families, assist those in need, and reduce dependency.
Rev. Nkuranga, who previously served as Chaplain to Bishop Nathan Ahimbisibwe, revealed that his first attempt at onion farming yielded a successful harvest of over 20 sacks from the church land.
