The leaders of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party in Kabale District have expressed their support for the decisive actions taken during the extraordinary delegate’s conference called by FDC Chairman Wasswa Birigwa that resulted in the suspension of Party President Eng Patrick Oboi Amuriat, Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi, and Treasurer Geoffrey Ekanya from the party.
The extraordinary delegate’s conference on Tuesday convened in Kampala at the ‘People’s Government’ offices at Katonga and decided to suspend these three prominent figures.
In their place, City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago assumed the role of party president, Harold Kaija took over as secretary general, and Francis Mwijukye stepped into the role of treasurer.
These individuals had previously served as deputies to the suspended officials. The interim officials are expected to lead the party for six months while the party addresses its internal challenges.
Representatives from Kabale District, including the Member of Parliament for Kabale Municipality, Hon Dr. Nicholas Thaddeus Kamara, and Gideon Tumwesigye, the FDC Vice Chairman for Kabale District, were part of the conference and represented the Chairman.
Lydia Turyahumura, the Kabale District FDC Chairperson, voiced her support for the suspension of the three individuals, citing allegations of abuse of office.
Turyahumura asserted that Amuriat and his suspended colleagues had shown signs of betraying the party and potentially divulging its secrets to the ruling government.
She emphasized that the party had entrusted them with the responsibility of fighting for liberty, but they appeared to have turned their backs on the party’s agenda. She also pointed out that the loss of parliamentary seats in the 2021 general election was partly attributed to the actions of these three individuals, which had resulted in setbacks for the party.
