Police in Kabale have confirmed a tragic road accident that claimed the life of 38-year-old Stephen Barugahare, a cyclist and resident of Karuhumu Cell, Kyanamira Sub-County, Kabale District. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, along the Kabale-Mbarara highway at Kabaraga.

The accident involved a silver Toyota Noah, registration number CGO 8207BN 01, driven by Dakalihire Innocent Safaris, a male resident of Mpondwe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The second vehicle involved was a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEQ 280C, which Barugahare was riding.

According to police reports, the Toyota Noah was traveling from Mbarara toward Kabale when it collided with Barugahare’s motorcycle, which was coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused the motorcyclist to die on the spot.

Preliminary investigations suggest that over-speeding by the driver of the Toyota Noah may have contributed to the accident. Officers from Kabale Police Station visited the scene, and the body of the deceased was transported to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Both vehicles were towed and are currently held at the police station awaiting inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Dakaliyire Innocent Safaris has been taken into police custody as investigations continue. ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the ongoing inquiries into the incident.
