Tragedy struck on the morning of January 6, 2024, as a fatal road accident unfolded at Kabaraga village in Kyanamira sub-county along the Kabale-Mbarara highway.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 09:00 AM, claimed the life of a German tourist, Dr. Wendsche Ralf Steffen, aged 58.

The other victims include Silk Venus, a 48-year-old German tourist, and Nyombi Morgan, a 60-year-old resident of Murungu Munyonyo Kampala district, who was the driver of the tourist vehicle belonging to Kibo Slopes Uganda Limited.

The ill-fated tourist vehicle, a green Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number UAX 567C, was en route from Bwindi Gorilla Valley to Kampala. Upon reaching Kabaraga corner, tragedy struck when a speeding Fuso lorry with registration number UBH009B, overtaking another unidentified vehicle, collided with the tourist vehicle.

The impact resulted in the instantaneous death of Dr. Wendsche Ralf Steffen, while Silk Venus and the driver, Nyombi Morgan, sustained injuries.

The scene of the accident was promptly attended to and documented by ACP Saiga Ibrahim, the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for Kigezi, who was assisted by RTO Sp Betubiza Fabian and ASP Mucunguzi, the District Traffic Officer (DTO) for Kabale.

The injured victims were swiftly transported to Kabale Referral Hospital for medical treatment, while Dr. Wendsche Ralf Steffen’s body was taken to the same hospital’s mortuary for postmortem examination.

The involved vehicleswere subsequently parked at Kabale Police Station pending further inspection by the relevant authorities. Investigations into the incident are currently underway to establish the full details surrounding the tragic accident.

    Stupid drivers are costing Uganda millions of dollars because very few tourists will continue coming here if these unserious drivers are not heavily punished for doing silly things on the roads.
